The Story Behind the Recipe

I’m not hosting Thanksgiving this year, but I was asked to bring stuffing and a cocktail. So I decided to create an apple-forward red wine sangria, and I loved it so much, I had to share it here!

Exciting story, I know. But what this sangria lacks for story, it makes up for in flavor. It’s SO, so good.

Cranberry Apple Sangria Ingredients

This cranberry apple sangria has two different kinds of fruit juices in it – apple cider for apple flavor, and cranberry for a tart edge that helps make this sangria extra drinkable. And, well, juice-y.

I also add cinnamon and whole cloves because both are phenomenal in a red sangria, and most definitely in a red apple sangria.

  • Red wine – I love Tempranillo for this sangria
  • Apple cider – For juicy apple flavor!
  • Cranberry juice – Adds a deep fruity note
  • Brandy & Triple Sec – Sangria must be boozy!
  • Apples – I like red delicious, honey crisp, or pink lady in this apple sangria
  • Cinnamon sticks & cloves – For a nice, deep, warm spiciness that really helps amp up sangria
  • Ice – for serving!

Ingredients

  • 1 750-ml bottle fruity red wine (I like Tempranillo for this sangria)
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 1 cup cranberry juice
  • 3/4 cup brandy
  • 1/2 cup Triple Sec
  • 3 medium apples cored and diced (I like a combo of red delicious or another red apple + pink lady apples)
  • 3 5- inch cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • Ice for serving

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients except for ice to a large pitcher. Stir and cover with a lid or plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or up to 24 hours.
  • Stir again before serving. To serve, fill glasses with ice. Spoon several pieces of fruit into the glass and fill the rest of the way with wine. Pluck out any cloves that float to the top (and/or warn your drinkers to keep an eye out for them and pick them out if they come across any!) Garnish with fresh peppermint leaves and cinnamon sticks for extra-festive flair.

Though I have to admit, antioxidants weren’t really front-of-mind when I decided to make these. I was thinking more about the pretty colors and bountiful flavors. Blood oranges bring a slightly tart, almost concentrated orange flavor to the table (though this can also depend on the specific oranges you get). And pomegranate juice gives it that signature juicy jolt – almost raspberry in flavor. Combined, you’ve got a fancy pink, sparkly cocktail on your hands that tastes as good as it looks.

Blood Orange and Pomegranate Champagne Cocktail recipe - Tart, juicy, and so happy, the pomegranate arils dance in the bubbles!

I tend towards Prosecco when making champagne cocktails because overly-sweet sparkling wine isn’t really my thing. But I have to admit that a teaspoonful of sugar (or, to be more champagne-cocktail authentic, a sugar cube) really makes it when using a drier wine. You could also start out with something sweeter and skip the wine – like a Moscato. Make it yours!

I can’t decide which part I’m more in love with – the gorgeous over-the-top blood orange slices, or the way the champagne bubbles make the pomegranate arils dance around while you’re drinking it. Or, you know, the champagne cocktail itself.

Lively, luscious, sparkly pink – and a little health boost, while we’re at it. This little champagne cocktail has you covered.

The Story Behind the Recipe

Mother Nature is toying with me this year. She snapped her fingers and BAM – overnight, literally, it was fall. After a couple of weeks, I resigned myself to the fact that the summer weather was gone for good and then BAM! Suddenly it was back up to 80 degrees. Dang, Mother Nature! Enough with the weather whiplash!

But then I cooled off (and chilled out) with some of this Ginger Pear White Sangria. A cool sipper perfectly appropriate for weather that’s on the warmer side, but full of fall fruit and warm autumn spices.

I forgive you, Mother Nature. I forgive you. This time.

I am into sangria. Like, way into sangria. Possibly a little too much into sangria. But sangria man! It’s delicious! Fruity, festive, fun to drink with friends.

A mason jar with pear sangria and two straws.

Sangria. Is there anything it can’t do? Change the weather, I guess.

Yes, I love sangria. And I love fall flavors. And pumpkin sangria is NOT happening. I’ve been giving in to the temptation to pumpkin-up most all the things, but If I ever go there, you have permission to smack me. Verbally, at least.

Pears and ginger on a cutting board; fruit in a pitcher with wine being poured in to make Pear Sangria.

Pear Sangria Ingredient Info

  • White wine – Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon blanc are excellent in this pear sangria.
  • Pears – I like Bartlett because they’re nice and crisp and hold up well, but any pear will do.
  • Ginger – Sliced fresh ginger goes so well with the pear flavors!
  • Lemon
  • Cloves – For a spicy kick
  • Rum – White or light rum
  • Brandy
  • Ginger ale or ginger beer – We’ve got two other types of alcohol on board – rum, because I pretty much always add rum to my sangria. Great reason, right? And also a splash of brandy. Because brandy and pears are natural buds. So it works.

How to Make It

Add the fruit, ginger, and spices to a pitcher, than top it with the wine, brandy, and rum. Allow it to mingle and marinate in the fridge for at least 4 hours.

Then, pour it into glasses, pull out a few pieces of pears, and top with ginger beer. YUM.

Oh, and this is optional but highly recommended, try the a subtle little gingered sugar rim before you pour the sangria into your glasses. It adds a little touch of spicy sweetness and it’s delicious!

Ingredients

For the sangria:

  • 750 ml white wine 1 bottle; I like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc in this sangria
  • 3 pears cored and cut into thin wedges [I like Bartlett because they're crisp and hold up well, but any pear will do!]
  • 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger sliced thinly
  • 1 medium lemon
  • 9 whole cloves
  • 1/2 cup white rum
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 36 ounces ginger beer or ginger ale 3 bottles

For rimming the glasses:

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Instructions

  • Add the pears and ginger to a large pitcher. Cut three slices out of the middle of the lemon. Place the ends of the lemon in a zipper bag or airtight container and place in the refrigerator; you’ll use those pieces to garnish the rims of the glasses later on. Stick three cloves into the flesh of each lemon slice and add to the pitcher.
  • Pour the wine,  rum, and brandy over the fruit in the pitcher. Seal tightly or cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, up to 8.
  • Have your glasses washed and ready. Place the sugar and ground ginger in a small bowl and mix together with a fork. Pour sugar mixture into a small saucer and spread it to the edges. Wet the rims of the glasses with lemon juice by dragging the cut sides of the lemon ends around the rims of the glasses, then invert the glasses into the sugar, pushing and turning until coated. Turn glasses right side up and set aside.
  • Strain the sangria mixture through a sieve and into a second large pitcher. Add the pear slices back into the pitcher and the lemon slices if desired; discard ginger slices and any other sediment.
  • Add a few slices of pears to each glass, then fill halfway with sangria mixture. Fill the rest of the way with ginger beer. Add straws, if desired, and serve.

This is a super light, refreshing, and easy sangria recipe. Just the way I like ’em! Fresh strawberries and kiwi fruit – and lots of it – join up with a few slices of lime (a little citrus-y kick is always good). And then, over all that luscious fruit, we pour a nice white wine, along with a good glug or two of rum. And a little drizzle of honey, if we’re up for it, to really set off all that sweet summer fruit. Then it goes in the fridge to get good and tasty and perfect.

Let’s fast-forward six hours, shall we? Because I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to get my refresh on.

Strawberry-Kiwi White Sangria recipe! Love this refreshing pink summer sangria.

Memorial Day is upon us, which means summer is upon us, which means summer cocktails are upon us! Except, well, let’s hope the cocktails aren’t actually upon us, because that would be a bummer. Especially in the case of this white-strawberry kiwi sangria. Let’s not spill any of this stuff. Let’s just sip it and make an enthusiastic toast to summer.

Strawberry-Kiwi White Sangria recipe! Love this refreshing pink summer sangria.

I’m always a fan of strawberry sangria, but I really like the sweet/tart note of kiwi fruit when added to the mix. Plus, it adds a pretty punch of green, too!

Depending on the ripeness of your kiwis, they might not be quite as sturdy as other typical sangria fruit. As in, some of it might fall apart a bit. Me, I kinda love when a bit of kiwi comes up the straw. It’s like Christmas. But in summer!

Anyway, for this lemon-lime margarita sangria, I’ll do things the old-fashioned way. Lemon is lemon and lime is lime and together they are lemon-lime.

Which, by the way, is a very good thing.

The Story Behind the Recipe

I’ve decided to try a slightly different angle this year when it comes to winter: I’m going to fully, enthusiastically embrace each phase of the season as it comes.

Rainy but mild? We’re donning raincoats and wellies and heading out to splash in puddles. Dark and dreary? Time to haul out the big blanket and cuddle in front of the fire. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Saint Patrick’s Day … there will be crafts to make, books to read, events to attend. A snowman will happen, and hot chocolate afterwards. And, of course, recipes to make for every season. Lots and lots of recipes.

Several of which – let’s be honest – will be cocktails.

three clear glasses of apple cider sangria with red and white striped straws

My new outlook – okay, yes, and maybe a glass or two of, say, this Apple Cider Sangria now and then – will help me to forget the fact that we will likely go for months without a peek of sunshine. It will help to make the three-week-long stretch of gray and drizzle come January more palatable. 16 hours of dark per day? No vacation to a sunny destination on the calendar?? Not a problem!

… Theoretically.

Man. Dark and gray. For the next five months.

Um, yeah. Get me another glass of apple cider sangria. Stat!

Yeah, winters can be tough, especially in the Pacific Northwest. But you know what? I actually am kind of excited for it now. In the immortal words of Patti LaBelle, I’ve got a new attitude!

And – AND! A new apple cider sangria recipe.

Apple Cider Sangria Ingredients

  • White wine – Something light, fruity, and a little dry. I really like Pinot Grigio with apple cider sangria.
  • Apple cider – Grab your fave.
  • Rum – A light rum is best.
  • Apples – I love to grab a variety of colors for the prettiest apple cider sangria, such as a combo of honey crisp, red delicious, golden delicious, and Granny Smith.)
  • Orange peels – Just a few to add mulled cider flavor to this cider sangria.
  • Cinnamon sticks & whole cloves
  • Ginger beer or ginger ale

How to Make Apple Cider Sangria

It’s super easy to make apple cider sangria! Just add all of the ingredients except ginger ale to a large pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

Then, before serving, add the ginger beer or ginger ale and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 750 ml bottle of white wine I like something light, fruity, and not too sweet. Pinot grigio is perfect for this sangria
  • 3 cups apple cider
  • 3/4 cup light rum aka white rum
  • 4 medium apples I like the colorful combo of honeycrisp, red delicious, golden delicious, and granny smith, cored and sliced
  • 3 orange peels about 2 inches in size; use a carrot peeler and try to avoid as much pith – the white part – as possible
  • 4 cinnamon sticks 3-inch sticks
  • 2 teaspoons whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice
  • 24 ounces ginger beer or ginger ale [2 bottles]

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients except ginger ale to a 2.5-quart or larger pitcher. Cover with airtight lid or cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, up to 24 hours.
  • If desired, remove fruit and pour mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to strain out the spices and orange peel. Discard spices and orange peel and return liquid and apples to the pitcher. Personally, I like having the cloves and allspice bob around in each glass, so I don’t strain, but you do have to be careful to dodge the whole spices when drinking it.
  • Pour liquid into glasses about halfway. Add apple slices until glass is about 3/4 full. Top off with ginger beer. Serve with a straw.

The Story Behind the Recipe

I have to wonder if my family is a little worried about me. At just about every family gathering for the last six months or more, I’ve had some sort of new sangria for them to test. I toted jars of it over to my niece’s birthday party. I broke it out it after dinner at a Mother’s Day gathering. I hadn’t gotten around to making a dessert, but sangria? Of course I did.

I guess sangria appeals to me on all levels. It lends itself to endless variations, which appeals to the food blogger in me. It’s delicious and sweet, which appeals to the glutton in me. And it’s boozy, which appeals to the lush in me.

So I guess I’m the family lush. But hey, at least I share.

Two glasses of rose sangria with a strawberry perched on the edge

Ingredients for Rosé Sangria

Seriously – five ingredients. Well, plus ice. So easy to put together, even easier to enjoy. And totally worth earning a bad reputation with your family (who, by the way, loved this version).

  • Rosé wine – I like rosé of Sangiovese for this rosé sangria.
  • Rum – Go for a light/white rum.
  • Strawberries – Fresh strawberries are the fruit in this rosé sangria. So good!
  • Limes – For a tart, refreshing note.
  • Lemon lime soda – Like Sprite or 7-up. Ginger ale works too, or for a less sweet version, you can try club soda.

How to Make It

It’s so easy! Just add the limes and strawberries to a pitcher, then pour the wine and rum over the top. Cover and place in the fridge for 4-24 hours.

Remove from the fridge, add the lemon-lime soda, then serve over ice. Yum!

Two glasses of rose sangria with a strawberry perched on the edge

The Best Rosé for Rosé Sangria

After sipping tongue-puckering versions in the past, I thought I hated rose wine – then I tried a Washington State Rosé of Sangiovese on a 100-degree summer day. Oh, mama! Rosé wines have come a long way. Think of the good ones as lighter, summery versions of your favorite red wines.

I LOVE rosé of Sangiovese in rose sangria or another not-too-dry rosé.

Rosé Sangria

Light, refreshing, and simple. The bright ruby-red color is compliments of starting with a nice pink rose wine, and then soaking strawberries in it. Lime adds a zesty bite, rum gives it a bit more potency, and lemon-lime soda helps make it entirely too drinkable.

The Story Behind the Recipe

If you’ve visited Kitchen Treaty before, even once, you’ve probably already seen that I’m a fiend for white sangria. Almost psycho level. Less obvious is my affinity for mojitos, but trust me. I stalk ’em both with enthusiasm.

And so. One dark and stormy night (okay, actually a partly cloudy day with off and on rain showers), I was thinking about white sangria and mojitos and also pineapple and limes. And then I had a sudden booming flash of brightness. I will put them all together! As one! Pineapple Mojito Sangria!

And then I rubbed my hands together with glee and laughed an evil (yet jovial!) laugh.

True story.

It took me a few tries to get there, but I dare say I think this is one of the best white sangria recipes I’ve made. It’s refreshing, but a little sweet, too. Unique, but not crazy-involved. Boozy, but not too boozy. Okay, actually, it is fairly boozy (and it’s also pretty easy to drink, so as always, I say: pace yourself!)

Readers say …

This was SO good! I subbed zero cal and less sweet key lime sparkling water for the lemon lime soda, and I would do less sugar next time but it is really delicious! Genius!

– Amy

Pineapple Sangria Ingredients

  • White wine – I like my white wine somewhat dry for sangria. Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio are both solid choices.
  • Rum – Choose a light/white rum
  • Pineapple juice
  • Lemon lime soda
  • Fresh pineapple – Cut into chunks. Spears are great, too, and perfect for picking up and eating.
  • Fresh mint – It wouldn’t be a mojito without it!
  • Limes
  • Sugar – To muddle with the mint and lime

How to Make Pineapple Mojito Sangria

I love that you start out by muddling lime slices, fresh mint, and sugar all together mojito-style, releasing all of those lime juices and those wonderful minty oils. (Bonus: muddling is an excellent stress reliever).

Then you pour in white wine, pineapple juice, and a little rum, and then throw in a whole huge pile of fresh pineapple chunks. Basically, you desecrate the heck out of all that lime-and-mint mojito-y wonderfulness. And it is good.

Let it soak for a good long while, then serve over ice and top with lemon lime soda. (In the spirit of true mojitos, I really, really wanted club soda to work, but my Official Kitchen Treaty Test Panel [okay, my in-laws] unanimously agreed: lemon lime soda is so much better.

But do try club soda if you like – please, go forth and laugh like an evil genius and make it your own!)

The Story Behind the Recipe

I’ve had delicious red sangria with hints of fall spices here and there (oh, so good), but never white. So I decided to give it a try, and man oh man, am I glad I did?

That would a be a “yes.”

Cinnamon, cloves, and allspice permeate this light white sangria – that’s what you taste hints of first. Then you get the fruitiness – honeycrisp apples, perfectly ripe pears. Then a bit – just a bit – of bite from the ginger ale.

And then you nibble on the fruit – oh my gosh, so good, but be warned! It’s all potent, but the fruit? It’s extra potent. As he finished off his glass, I may or may not have heard my guy say to the baby, “Later on, Daddy’s got a date with a fork and a pitcher!”

He’s so going to kill me for sharing that.

Fall Sangria Ingredients

  • White wine – Sauvignon blanc or Pinot Grigio are great, but any dry white wine will do.
  • Orange – Sliced
  • Pear – I love Bartlett pears in sangria (like this pear sangria!) because they’re nice and firm, but any pear will do.
  • Apple – Honeycrisp is especially good!
  • Cloves – Stick ’em in the orange peel, mulled cider style
  • Cinnamon sticks – Both for flavoring and for serving.
  • Allspice
  • Rum – Go with light/white rum.
  • Ginger ale

How to Make It

First, poke holes in the orange peel and stick the cloves in. Add to your pitcher. Add the remaining fruit and spices, then pour the wine and rum over the top. Let it sit in the fridge for a few hours, then top with ginger ale and serve. That’s it!

Tip for Success

  • The longer it sits (up to 3 days), the better it tastes. Just wait until right before serving to add the ginger ale, or you’ll lose the fizz.

  • 2 teaspoons whole allspice
  • 1/2 cup white rum
  • 4 cups ginger ale

  • Add clove-studded orange slices to a pitcher along with the pear and apple slices. Top with the cinnamon sticks and sprinkle in the allspice.
  • Pour in the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and add the rum. Stir gently.

  • Remove from refrigerator and strain mixture to remove allspice and any errant bits of clove. Add back the fruit and cinnamon sticks.

Notes

  • Sauvignon Blanc is good, but Pinot Grigio would be great, too – any dry white wine should do
