The Story Behind the Recipe

Lately the term “self care” has taken on more meaning for me. It’s not just about thriving but more like … honestly … surviving. Not to be vague, but, it’s just a crazy world out there. It’s been feeling crucial to me to be very proactive about taking care of myself and peppering my days with little pleasures … and this Chamomile Latte definitely falls into the “little pleasure” category!

If “cozy vibes” was an ingredient, this Chamomile Tea Latte would be packed with it! Really though, we’re just talking soothing chamomile flowers (or teabags), creamy oat milk (or your favorite milk), a touch of honey and maybe a little sprinkle of ground cardamom. Simple, easy, cozy.

I like making this Chamomile Latte when I’m craving an afternoon latte but it’s past my caffeine consumption deadline (noon sharp). It’s also a great bedtime nightcap. Sort of like a sleepy girl mocktail situation, which has its place, but, you know, without the words “sleepy,” “girl,” or “mocktail.” (I’m firmly Gen X here; I’m not sure I’m “girl” anything at this point 🤣)

Why You’ll Love This Chamomile Latte

  • Easy! This Chamomile Latte is super simple to make. It comes together quickly and only needs a handful of ingredients.
  • Cozy! You can’t deny the comforting aura around this Chamomile Latte. It’s just happy-making.
  • Relaxing! Chamomile has been scientifically proven to have calming effects, with effective anti-anxiety properties. So cool! (source)
Ingredients for Chamomile Latte

Ingredients

  • Chamomile – You’ll want dried chamomile flowers (I like to get mine here) or a couple of chamomile tea bags. I have yet to try this with fresh chamomile, but I plan to grow some in my herb garden this year and see how it fares!
  • Water – Just a bit of water to help extract all of the goodness from the chamomile.
  • Milk – I prefer oat milk because it’s creamy, froths wonderfully, and is just a touch sweet.
  • Honey – Optional, but go for it if you prefer a sweeter latte!
  • Cardamom – Also optional, but I love the warm, slightly citrus note it adds when I sprinkle a little on top.

Adaptations/Variations

  • Chamomile Lavender Latte – Add a teaspoon of dried culinary lavender with the chamomile for an extra relaxing latte.
  • Extra Cardamom Chamomile Latte – Smash a cardamom pod and add it to the chamomile tea while brewing. Sprinkle a little bit of ground cardamom over the foam before serving.
  • Vegan Chamomile Latte – Swap the honey for pure maple syrup or agave syrup.

How to Make a Chamomile Latte

  1. Place your chamomile flowers in a tea infuser or the tea bags into a large mug. Pour boiling water over the top and let them steep for around 5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, heat up your oat milk in a frothing machine or on the stovetop.
  3. Remove the tea from the water and then pour in the warm oat milk. Stir in some honey, if desired.
  4. Top with the froth and add a sprinkle of cardamom, if you’d like.

Equipment

You don’t need a fancy frother to make this oat milk latte.

You can simply heat the milk in a saucepan on the stovetop, then spin a whisk in it to froth it up. You can also use a handheld frother, which is inexpensive and fun to use. I have an electric frothing machine that was a bit of a splurge but I’ve gotten my money out of it and then some!

Frother Recommendations

  • Stainless steel frother: I have and love this milk frother. Just add your milk, set the temp, and press the button for heated, frothy milk. It has swappable frothing discs for no froth or for lots of froth.
  • Hand frother: This $15 handheld milk frother wand gives you a great froth for the price of a couple of coffee shop lattes.

I hope you love this chamomile tea latte as much as I do! I’ve been enjoying this subtly flavored latte for months now and I thought it was time to share so you, too, can enjoy your own cozy chamomile moments!

Chamomile Latte Recipe

Subtle notes of chamomile in warm, comforting oat milk (or milk of your choice). Sweeten this tea latte with honey and top with a touch of ground cardamom for a cozy drink that's as relaxing as it is delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers or two bags of chamomile tea
  • 8 ounces oat milk or milk of choice
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey to taste + more for drizzling on top, if desired
  • pinch ground cardamom for sprinkling over the foamy top, if you like

Instructions

  • Heat water to boiling. Place chamomile flowers in a tea infuser over a large mug, or place the two tea bags inside. Pour over the top and steep for 5 minutes. Stir in the honey, starting with a teaspoon then adding more later if you want it sweeter.
  • Meanwhile, heat the oat milk on the stovetop, or use a frothing machine to heat it up.
  • Froth your milk for a nice foamy latte. If you heat the milk on the stove, you can froth the heated milk by using a hand frother or by spinning a wire whisk in the milk.
  • Pull the tea infuser or tea bags out of the water and discard. Pour the warm frothed oat milk about 4/5 of the way. Top the rest with foam by pouring or spooning it on top. Drizzle honey over the top and a pinch of ground cardamom if you like. Serve.

Notes

I like these chamomile flowers.
The first time you make this, you might want to try it without the honey (personally I think it’s delicious either way.) You can pour the warm frothed oat milk about 4/5 of the way, then add 1 teaspoon of honey to see if it’s at the sweetness level that you like (if not, add the second teaspoon or more). Then top with froth.

Vegan option:

Swap the honey for pure maple syrup or agave syrup.

Comforting, warm, and energizing … this Honey Vanilla Oat Milk Latte is your perfect match! And with just four ingredients and only a few minutes to make, this oat milk latte recipe is SO easy to whip up at home. Later, expensive coffee shop! 👋

A honey vanilla oat milk latte on a wooden coaster with a peach backdrop and honey in the background.

I’m absolutely obsessed with oat milk lattes – I just love how easy they are to make! I often enjoy oat milk lattes plain – just espresso and oat milk – but sometimes I want to up the ante and add a bit of sweetness and round it out with vanilla. This honey vanilla oat milk lattes are the result, and it is divine!

Table of Contents

The Story Behind the Recipe

When you live in a drizzly, gray place like Seattle in the winter, you learn how to embrace the cozy! Finding cozy, comforting elements wherever you can really helps a person get through the long, dark winters. That’s probably why coffee shops are a massive thing in the Pacific Northwest!

I love a good coffee shop and a great barista-made oat milk latte, but I also feel like oat milk lattes are one of the easiest and most accessible coffee shop drinks to make at home.

Why You’ll Love This Honey Vanilla Oat Milk Latte

Oat milk is amazing in lattes, for one. It froths up SO fabulously and tastes rich, creamy, and luxurious.

Even if you normally love dairy, I’m willing to bet that once you try oat milk in lattes, you might not want to go back!

I love straight-up oat milk lattes – with just warmed and frothed oat milk + espresso – but when I’m really craving a treat, I grab the honey and vanilla extract and make a honey vanilla oat milk latte.

There’s just something about the floral sweetness of honey and the warmth of vanilla that really make this coffee drink so special.

Ingredients for honey vanilla oat milk latte

Ingredients

  • Oat milk – I’m on team oat milk these days when it comes to lattes – it’s thick and creamy and froths so well. But you can easily swap in your favorite dairy milk or plant-based alternative.
  • Espresso or strong coffee – Whichever you prefer, but I have some details about what I’ve been using lately for lattes in the “Equipment” section of this post.
  • Honey – Any light honey will do (I’m partial to clover or blackberry honey). If you’re vegan or if you don’t have any honey on hand, pure maple syrup makes an excellent swap-in.
  • Pure vanilla extract

Adaptations/Variations

  • Plain Oat Milk Latte – Just leave out the honey and vanilla for a plain version. I drink these all the time, too!
  • Vegan Oat Milk Latte – If you’re vegan, you’ll want to sub out the honey for pure maple syrup.
  • Cinnamon Honey Oat Milk Latte – Add a dash of cinnamon to the oat milk + a bit more cinnamon sprinkled over the top.

Equipment

While you can use a fancy espresso machine if you have one, it’s totally not needed! You don’t need any fancy equipment to make this oat milk latte.

I’m completely obsessed with this stovetop espresso maker that’s less than $20 and super easy to use. You can also just use your favorite brewing method to whip up some strong coffee.

A white mug full of oat milk latte with coffee beans and honey in the background

For the milk, it can be as simple as heating up the milk and honey on your stove then frothing it, or you can use an electric frothing machine which, for me, is a little wintertime splurge that I love.

This is what the equipment I use to make my lattes (these are all affiliate links; if you click and make a purchase, I will receive a small percentage of the sale for referring you, at no additional cost):

Espresso brewer

  • Stovetop espresso maker: This $20 stovetop espresso maker is so wonderful! Just fill the bottom with water, add ground espresso beans to the cup, and set it over medium-low heat on the stove. The espresso bubbles up into the upper chamber, and from there, you can just pour it directly into your latte mug. and you just pour that directly into your mug.

Frother

  • Stainless steel milk frother: I have and love this milk frother, which has been so amazing during the cold months! Just put your milk in, set the temperature, and press the button for heated, frothy milk. Swap out the little frothing disc for no froth or lots of froth.
  • Hand frother: This inexpensive $10 handheld milk frother wand gives you a great froth for just about the price of a coffee shop latte!

How to Make a Honey Vanilla Oat Milk Latte

  1. Brew your coffee or espresso and add it to your mug.
  2. Heat up your milk and honey, give it a good froth, then stir in the vanilla.
  3. Pour the milk into the espresso or coffee in your mug, spooning the frothy bits over the top.
  4. Drizzle with more honey if you like.
  5. Aaaannnnd get cozy!

With a warm spicy note that’s the epitome of the word “cozy,” this Gingerbread Latte recipe is the perfect way to enjoy your coffee in December (or November, or October, if you really love to get the Christmas spirit going early!)

This gingerbread latte is made super simply, with steamed milk (I use oat milk), espresso or strong coffee, a dollop of whipped cream if you like, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Mini gingerbread people optional but highly recommended!

Table of Contents

The Story Behind the Recipe

Mornings are my favorite time of day, and 90% of why that is, is coffee. I’ve had to experiment with limiting or eliminating caffeinated coffees in the past, in which case I delved into these coffee alternatives which were actually pretty good. But nothing beats a pot of strong coffee, a perfectly brewed latte, or, in the summer, a cold brew and I’ve always been thankful that I’ve been able to return to caffeinated coffee.

One of the best ways to enjoy a nice, cozy cup of coffee is in the form of an oat milk latte, and, in December, make that a gingerbread oat milk latte! I’m a huge fan of oat milk in lattes, not just because I need to limit my dairy intake, but also because it’s thick, rich, and foams amazingly.

This gingerbread latte recipe is super easy to make with whichever kind of milk you prefer, though.

Why You’ll Love This Gingerbread Latte

If you’re a Starbucks fan, you know: December is all about peppermint mochas and gingerbread lattes. Sure, you can buy your fancy coffee drinks, but it’s alway nice to know how to make Starbucks gingerbread latte recipe and other coffee shop drinks at home. Plus, now that lattes are often something like $7 a pop, it’s EXTRA nice to know how to make them at home!

Turns out it’s really, really easy to recreate the gingerbread latte experience in your own kitchen. All you need is a few minutes to make the syrup, then just stick it in the fridge for whenever you need an ultra cozy latte in your hands, stat. Then it’s just a matter of steaming your milk, brewing your coffee or espresso, and adding the gingerbread syrup when you have a hankering!

Ingredients for gingerbread latte

Ingredients

  • Gingerbread coffee syrup – Made with sugar, water, molasses, and gingerbread spices.
  • Milk – Use your favorite dairy milk or plant-based alternative. I’m on team oat milk these days when it comes to lattes.
  • Espresso or strong coffee – Whichever you prefer, but I have some details about what I’ve been using lately for lattes in the “Equipment” section of this post.
  • Whipped cream and ground cinnamon – Optional but highly recommended!

Equipment

You don’t need any fancy equipment to make this gingerbread latte. You can literally brew up some strong coffee, add the gingerbread coffee syrup, heat up your milk on the stove, spin a whisk into the milk to froth it, and pour it into your mug with the coffee and gingerbread syrup.

OR you can go the other direction and get a super fancy does-it-all espresso machine.

Me, I use pretty inexpensive equipment – though my frother was a little bit of a splurge. Here’s what I use to make my lattes (please note these are all affiliate links, so if you click and make a purchase, I will receive a small percentage of the sale for referring you, at no additional cost to you):

Espresso brewer

  • Stovetop espresso maker: I recently bought this $20 stovetop espresso maker (affiliate link), and it’s such a game changer when it comes to being able to make shots of espresso for lattes super inexpensively! You just fill the bottom with water, add finely ground espresso beans to the cup, and set it on the stove. The espresso perks up into the top chamber, and you just pour that directly into your mug.

Frother

  • Stainless steel milk frother: I have this amazing milk frother, which was a more of a splurge, but I have gotten SO much use of it out of the years. You just put your milk in, set the temp, and press the button for perfect heated, frothy milk. You can add ingredients to the milk like hot cocoa mix or sweetener, and it all mixes together beautifully. Just change out the little frothing disc for no froth or lots of froth.
  • Hand frother: I’ve also used an inexpensive $10 handheld milk frother wand in the past, which works great!

How to Make a Gingerbread Latte

First, you’ll want to make the gingerbread coffee syrup. Add the sugar, water, molasses, and spices to a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Cook until the sugar has dissolved. (You can view the full post for gingerbread latte coffee syrup right here – it’s perfect for holiday gifting!)

Next, brew your coffee or espresso and add it to your mug. Add a couple of tablespoons of the gingerbread coffee syrup, then heat up your milk, give it a good froth, and pour it over the coffee and syrup.

That’s it! A homemade gingerbread latte in your hot little hands.

I hope this Gingerbread Latte brightens up your holidays like it has mine! It’s super easy to make with a simple but deeply flavored homemade coffee syrup, espresso, and milk. Serve it up with mini gingerbread cookies for the full experience!

Ingredients

For the gingerbread coffee syrup:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons dark molasses not blackstrap
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

For the gingerbread latte:

  • 2 shots espresso or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 2-3 tablespoons gingerbread coffee syrup to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups milk 12 ounces; I prefer full-fat oat milk. Dairy milk, almond milk, or soy milk also work!
  • whipped cream and ground cinnamon for topping, optional

Instructions

Make the gingerbread coffee syrup.

  • Place all ingredients in a small saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves. Turn off the heat and let cool off until cool enough to handle. Drain through a cheesecloth if you can to catch any grittiness.
  • Place a fine-mesh strainer over a mason jar or another container. Lay cheesecloth on top if you have it (not crucial but nice to catch any residual grittiness from the spices). Strain coffee syrup into your jar.

Make the gingerbread latte.

  • Brew the espresso or coffee and add it to a 16-ounce or larger mug.
  • Heat the oat milk over the stove or froth it using a frothing machine. You can also froth it using a hand frother or a wire whisk – just place the wire part in the cup, place the handle between both of your hands, and spin it in the cup.
  • Stir in the gingerbread coffee syrup. I recommend starting at 2 tablespoons and increasing to 3 if you prefer.
  • Top with whipped cream, if using, and sprinkle with cinnamon. Serve.

This decadent Crock Pot Hot Chocolate recipe is one I turn to time and time again! It’s such an easy way to make hot cocoa for a crowd.

Snowy days, Christmas, cozy nights in … there are so many reasons to enjoy hot chocolate! This Crock Pot Hot Chocolate makes whipping up a big, rich batch super easy – and it’s rich, creamy, and super chocolatey. Plus, we’re talking just a couple minutes prep time and only 5 ingredients!

A white ladle pours crock pot hot cocoa into a mug.

Table of Contents

Two mugs full of crock pot hot chocolate with whipped cream and pinecones in the background completing a wintery scene.

The Story Behind the Recipe

I wanted to create a large-batch hot chocolate recipe that was super easy to make, stayed nice and warm for whenever the crowd is ready to start sipping, and was pretty hands-off. Needless to say, the Crock Pot was the answer!

crock pot hot cocoa in a white mug with whipped cream on a wooden board. Green foliage, marshmallows, and a spoonful of whipping cream are tin the b background.

I strived to keep this Crock Pot hot chocolate recipe as simple as possible. If you’re using the Crock Pot, you’re probably already looking for hands-off and easy. I know I am! So I pared it down to what, I feel, are only the necessary ingredients yet still deliver a creamy, dreamy, chocolatey hot cocoa situation.

And you can even pare down even further, if you like, by subbing milk for the whipping cream and using a sweeter chocolate chip then skipping the sugar.

ingredients for crock pot hot chocolate

Ingredients

  • Heavy whipping cream – Rich and creamy heavy whipping cream makes a luxurious hot chocolate. If you want a simpler, lighter hot cocoa, you can sub in 2 additional cups of milk.
  • Milk – Whole milk or 2%, preferably.
  • Chocolate chips – I like to go with semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • Sugar – Start with two tablespoons, then stir in a third if you think it needs to be a bit sweeter.
  • Salt – Optional, but a hefty pinch of salt helps to highlight the chocolate flavors while helping tame the sweetness.
  • Pure vanilla extract – Adds another note of sweet, cozy flavor.

Adaptations/Variations

  • Vegan/dairy-free hot cocoa: Substitute the whole milk and heavy whipping cream with 6 cups of full-fat unsweetened oat milk and make sure your chocolate chips and whipping cream are dairy-free. If vegan, skip the marshmallows or buy vegan marshmallows like Dandies brand.
  • Almond hot cocoa: I once accidentally dumped almond extract into a warm batch of Crock Pot hot cocoa. Almond extract is strong – you need a lot less of almond vs. vanilla! But when I cautiously tasted it to see if I could salvage it, it was absolutely delicious! Though I recommend maybe only 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract instead of the full teaspoon if you try this.

How to Make Crock Pot Hot Cocoa

It’s super easy to make this hot chocolate recipe in the Crock Pot. Just add all of the ingredients, except the vanilla, to your Crock Pot, and turn it up to high. Stir every 30 minutes or so until steaming hot and the chocolate chips are melted. Switch the Crock Pot to the “warm” setting to keep the hot cocoa warm without it boiling.

Add the vanilla extract, taste and add more sugar if you like, and serve with copious amounts of whipped cream and/or marshmallows!

A white and wood ladle scoops hot cocoa out of a crock pot.

Tips for Success

  • This is more of a hands-on Crock Pot recipe than most. While it is super simple and easy, you’ll want to be around so that you can stir it every 30 minutes or so to help the chocolate chips melt and distribute without sticking to the bottom of the Crock Pot.
  • Make it a hot cocoa bar. Serve the warm Crock Pot of hot cocoa alongside a variety of toppings like marshmallows, whipped cream, candy canes, nuts, toffee, cookies, coffee syrups, chocolate syrup, and more. You can even provide disposable travel mugs with lids and sleeves if they need to take their hot cocoa on the go!

I hope you love this Crock Pot Hot Chocolate recipe as much as we do! It’s simple and easy, the perfect way to get piping hot cocoa into the hands of a gaggle of kids or group of grown-ups.

Nothing else quite warms up a cold winter’s night like Gluhwein does. Gluhwein (spelled, properly, Glühwein – the u has an umlaut) is a hot spiced wine, and this winter cocktail warms you through – from your fingers as you cozy them around your mug all the way to the tips of your toes.

Ahhh. Now it’s the holidays.

About This Recipe

This recipe for glühwein is super easy to make. And with its head-to-toe warming factor, this hot spiced wine is perfect for solstice walks. It’s perfect for snowflake-specked nights around the bonfire. It’s perfect for sitting in front of a crackling fireplace with a good book. Basically it’s perfect for all things winter.

What is Glühwein?

Glühwein is mulled – or spiced – wine, traditionally served up at Christmas markets in Germany.

It’s simply gently warmed red wine, simmered with warm winter spices like cinnamon and cloves. Then it’s sweetened with sugar, balanced with a bit of citrus, and – if you’re me – boozed up a bit more with a slug of brandy.

There are many names and variations served at Christmas markets all across Europe. Glogg, wassail, mulled wine, hot wine … or, of course, Glühwein – which literally translates to “glow wine.” Makes sense to me! (Where I learned that and more about the history of Glühwein can be found here.)

In our house back here in the U.S., we call it Glühwein because the first time we tried mulled wine, it was a Glühwein. And … it was in a German theme town in our state, right here in the U.S. (Hangs head in shame.)

I know, I know. I wish we had an incredible story about a decades-ago wintertime stroll at an actual European Christmas Market. And that’s definitely a life goal.

Instead, our mulled-wine story took place several years ago on a frosty evening as we strolled the shops of Leavenworth, Washington. We ducked into a wine tasting shop and came out with our mittens wrapped around a warm mug of steaming, intoxicating goodness that warmed us from our noses to our toes.

And we’ve been recreating and refining our own Glühwein recipe back at home ever since. We love it, our guests love it, and I hope you don’t mind me sharing our recipe with you even though our experience – and recipe – might not be the most authentic you’ll find.

What are the Best Mulled Wine Spices for Glühwein?

For the best and easiest Glühwein, I take a cue from my Hot Spiced Cider recipe by 1) keeping it simple and 2) starting with a clove-studded orange.

I’ve tried many mulled wine spices in my mulled drinks and have found that a ton of spices is really not necessary – more does not equal merrier! In my opinion, the best mulled wine spices are simply a combination of:

  • Cloves (whole, stuck in an orange)
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • This is not a spice, but for my Glühwein, I love to add some lemon peel too for extra citrussy brightness.

For the cloves and orange combo, not only is it super festive looking, but poking the cloves into the peel of a whole orange helps release the oils in the skin of the orange, adding flavor without bitterness. Plus, it helps contain the cloves so you don’t have to worry about picking a loose one out when you serve your Gluhwein.

How to Make Glühwein (Hot Spiced Wine)

I add the orange to a medium saucepan over low heat. Then, I add some whole cinnamon sticks and a bottle of light-ish red wine. A low-to-mid-level pinot noir is always a winner for us. Next, stir in some sugar – plain old granulated is a good bet, though some might try honey or brown sugar. I like to keep the sweetener simple in Glühwein so the wine, citrus, and spice flavors really shine through. Oh, and throw in some lemon peels for good measure for a bit more citrus zest. Pun intended.

Then I bring my spiced wine to just below a simmer and let it mingle with the citrus and spices for about 20 minutes. Then add brandy for some more warming magic. Brandy is such a perfect companion for mulled cocktails that I add it to almost every single one I make.

So now that it’s obvious that you need Glühwein in your life, here’s the full, printable recipe. Cheers to a happy and cozy winter!

Glühwein (Hot Spiced Red Wine)

A winter cocktail sure to warm you from your head to your toes. Red wine is warmed with spices and citrus, then amped up with a bit of brandy for the coziest holiday drink.
Servings 4 servings
Calories 266kcal

Ingredients

  • 1 each medium organic orange
  • 20 each whole cloves give or take a few cloves – no need to be exact
  • 750 ml light red wine 1 bottle, on the drier/lighter side is better. We love Pinot Noir, Lemburger or Merlot can also work
  • 3 each (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
  • 5 each strips lemon peel about 2 inches long each, just use a carrot peeler and try to avoid including too much pith
  • 1/4 cup sugar start with 1/4 cup and add to taste up to 2/3 cup
  • 1/3 cup brandy

Optional garnish

  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Orange slices

Instructions

  • Using a toothpick, poke 20 holes all over your orange, then poke the cloves into the holes.
  • Add orange to a medium saucepan. Pour the wine into the pan. Add the cinnamon sticks, lemon peel, and 1/3 cup sugar. Stir gently to help dissolve the sugar.
  • Turn the heat on medium-low and heat until just below a simmer. Do not boil! Reduce heat to low – just enough to keep warm but again, not simmering or boiling. Cover and let warm over the heat for about 20 minutes, until hot wine is flavored by the spices.
  • Stir in the brandy. Taste and add more sugar if desired. Depending on your wine and tastes, you may only need the intial 1/4 cup of sugar, or you may need the entire 2/3 cup.
  • Ladle into three large or four smaller mugs, garnish if desired, pass 'em out and and inhale your Glühwein goodness.

London Fog Drinks (also known as Earl Gray Tea Lattes) are my drink of choice in the wintertime. Warm, cozy, comforting, and wonderful with almond milk or oat milk, London Fog Tea Lattes make for the perfect treat when I’m not in the mood for coffee. (Which, shockingly, does actually happen occasionally!)

You can buy a London Fog Drink at Starbucks (I especially like their version with almond milk), but you can also make a super delicious version at home.

How to Make a London Fog Latte - A warm and cuddly drink made with citrussy Earl Gray tea, vanilla, honey, and steaming milk. Add a bit of lavender if you want, too, for even more cozy-factor! Made dairy-free with oat milk or almond, but feel free to use the milk you like!

Before I get into exactly how to make one, you may be wondering …

What is a London Fog Drink?

A London Fog Drink is a latte made with:

  • Earl Gray tea
  • Frothed milk of your choice (oat milk is my fave when making it at home; almond when I’m buying it at Starbucks or somewhere else)
  • Vanilla
  • A sweetener like vanilla syrup, honey, or even pure maple syrup
  • Other optional ingredients are a pinch of lavender buds for a floral note, or a peel of orange rind to punch up the bergamot in Earl Gray. Both recommended!

London Fog Latte Drinks can also be made iced and are quite lovely when it’s warmer outside.

The citrus note from the bergamot oil in the Earl Gray tea along with a touch of sweetness and vanilla, plus the creaminess of a perfectly frothed milk makes for a wonderfully warming drink. My fave!

How do you make London Fog Drinks?

My version of a London Fog Tea Latte involves brewing a concentrated Earl Gray tea, then stirring in a bit of honey and vanilla extract after it has brewed. You can also add a pinch of culinary lavender if you’d like – it adds a soothing floral note.

While the tea brews, I froth my milk. I have this frother (affiliate link) which is worth every single penny (and then some), but you can also warm your milk on the stove then hit it with a handheld frother if you like. Or just skip the frothing altogether if you don’t have one.

By far, my favorite non-dairy milk alternative for lattes is oat milk. It froths up so rich and creamy – so good! Almond milk is lovely as well, but I find it doesn’t froth as much.

If you’re looking for a cozy-comforting warm drink to curl up with, I hope you try this London Fog Latte for some instant hygge! It’s quick, easy, and super easy to make at home.

  • 1 Earl Gray tea bag
  • Pinch culinary lavender optional; I usually make it without
  • 2 teaspoons honey or to taste*
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of your favorite milk I prefer oat milk for these

This Golden Milk Latte – also known as a turmeric tea latte – is comforting, delicious, and good for you too! With warming turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon, this golden latte reminds me of a cozy hot chocolate, but with health benefits, too.

Basically, this latte with turmeric is a total win!

Golden milk latte, also known as turmeric tea, in white mugs on a wooden board with cinnamon sticks.

I think we can all agree that turmeric is has been having a moment, well, for a while now – and for good reason. My favorite way to enjoy it? In the form of a Golden Milk Latte!

What is a Golden Milk Latte?

In a nutshell, a turmeric latte is made by simmering turmeric and ginger with milk. To make it more of a latte, I go heavy on the milk and froth it – and I highly recommend adding a touch of cinnamon and vanilla to the equation too.

Taste-wise, to me, golden lattes are reminiscent of a chai tea latte – both are warm, spicy, and comforting.

What Do Golden Lattes Taste Like?

Like coffee, golden lattes can be a bit of an acquired taste. Turmeric can be a bit bitter, though simmering helps tame that. Ginger, vanilla, and honey also help counteract the bitterness.

Readers say …
“Thank you for this recipe. I’ve tried a few different Turmeric Tea recipes but yours is by far the best. It is so tasty!! And the anti inflammatory properties in this drink is a big bonus for me. Thanks for sharing!”

Recipe Development Notes

  • Dried turmeric vs. fresh turmeric: I’ve tried this turmeric tea latte with fresh turmeric root, but I prefer both the ease and taste of ground turmeric. I’ve also made it with fresh ginger and like it just as well as ground, though the end result is a bit more … piquant (in a good way).
  • Dialing in the sweetener & spices: I’ve tried golden milk lattes with pure maple syrup instead of the honey, crushed cardamom pods, vanilla beans, star anise, cayenne pepper, and peppercorns instead of ground black pepper. And honestly, all versions are delicious. But ultimately, I decided to keep this Golden Milk Latte recipe at its most basic and I encourage you to tinker with the recipe until you’re happy with your own personalized version.

Golden Latte Recipe Ingredients

For this golden milk latte recipe, I keep it as easy and as basic as possible, a building block for you and your own customized golden latte deliciousness. No matter which way you try it, I just know you’re going to love this golden milk and all of those turmeric tea benefits!

  • Milk – I like to use unsweetened almond milk, but oat milk is also rich and delicious. Dairy milk works too; just use whichever you like!
  • Honey – I love the rich sweetness of honey in golden milk lattes. Pure maple syrup is an excellent substitute, especially if you’re eating a vegan diet.
  • Turmeric – I go with the vibrant orange-yellow ground dried turmeric found in the spice aisle.
  • Ginger – I also use ground dried ginger, but 1-2 teapoons of grated fresh ginger works well, too.
  • Cinnamon – One cinnamon stick for subtle cinnamon flavor.
  • Vanilla – I love how vanilla rounds out the sweet and spicy flavors in golden milk lattes!
  • Coconut oil – This is optional, but some studies have shown that a touch of fat like coconut oil can help your body absorb some of the beneficial compounds found in turmeric. (source + more info)

Recipe Adaptations & Variations

Make Golden Milk Powder: I love this little shortcut for making turmeric lattes. In a small bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons ground turmeric, 2 tablespoons ground ginger, and 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon. When you’re ready to make a golden latte, add 1 teaspoon of the mix to the saucepan along with the other ingredients.

Vegan Golden Milk Latte: Be sure and use a plant-based milk, and swap the honey for pure maple syrup or agave syrup.

Optional additions – add with the other spices at the beginning of the process.

  • Pinch freshly ground black pepper (also reported to help your body absorb cucurmin from the turmeric)
  • 1/2 vanilla bean (seeds scraped and entire bean added)
  • 2-3 cardamom pods (crushed)
  • 1 star anise
  • Pinch ground cayenne pepper
  • Pinch freshly ground nutmeg
  • Black peppercorns
Two golden milk lattes in rustic white mugs with a pot of honey and a pitcher in the background

How to Make a Turmeric Latte

  1. Set a small pan over low heat and add the almond milk, a little honey, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper. Whisk it all together.
  2. Bring the mixture to steaming, just below a simmer (don’t boil).
  3. Remove from the heat and remove the cinnamon stick and any other large spices that need to removed (you can strain it too). Then stir in the coconut oil and vanilla. Taste and add more vanilla if you like.
  4. I like to froth the final product, giving my turmeric tea a decidedly latte-esque feel. But frothing is absolutely not required – it’s wonderful either way.
  5. Pour into a mug and enjoy!

FAQs

Q: Does a turmeric latte contain coffee?
Nope! It might have the name “latte” in it, but it doesn’t have espresso or coffee. I call it a latte because of the creamy, frothy milk.

Q: What are the health benefits of golden milk?
Turmeric (curcumin), is well-known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (source). A latte with turmeric is the perfect way to enjoy this wonder-spice!

Q: Can I use fresh turmeric instead of ground turmeric?
Yes, although when I was testing this recipe, I actually preferred the dried turmeric, but fresh works too! Either way, you’ll get turmeric tea benefits. Use about 1 teaspoon grated fresh turmeric and strain before serving.

Q: How do I make this turmeric latte frothy?
After heating, froth with a hand-frothed or whisk vigorously by placing the whisk in the drink, putting the handle between your palms, and moving them back and forth for a quick spin.

Q: Can I make this an iced turmeric latte?
Yes! Let it cool completely, then pour over ice.

I’m an amalgamation of about a gazillion different heritages – Norwegian, German … tarheel … I don’t even really know. So every time I post something culturally specific, I feel like a bit of a phony. So I’ll just start off by saying this is, no doubt, quite far from actual real authentic Irish coffee. I suppose the “vegan” in the title could also have tipped you off to that. And the Scotch whiskey instead of Irish whiskey could possibly be downright criminal. I don’t even know. Disclaimer, disclaimer, disclaimer.

Irish coffee (to the best of my knowledge!) is a simple drink made with hot coffee, whiskey, and a little bit of sugar if you wish. Then. Then! The best part: a big awesome layer of sweetened whipped cream floating on the top. You sip your spiked coffee through the cream, acquiring a bit with each drink of coffee.

Good stuff. Warming stuff. Comforting stuff. Delicious stuff.

This dairy-free version simply substitutes the dairy-based whipped cream with coconut whipped cream, which really is a perfect topper for Irish coffee. It floats on top like a dream – and, bonus, coconut + coffee already go together like whoa (coconut milk is, incidentally, one of my favorite alternate coffee creamers).

So, is this authentic? Probably not. But is it awesome? Well, I think so!

  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt

For the Vegan Irish Coffee:

  • 1/3 cup coconut whipped cream

Instructions

Make the coconut whipped cream

  • Spoon the white, solid layer off of the top of the can of coconut milk and place it in the bowl of a stand mixer affixed with the whisk attachment or in a medium bowl so you can use a hand mixer. Beat at medium speed until it forms stiff peaks, 2-3 minutes. Add syrup, vanilla, and pinch salt.

Assemble the Vegan Irish Coffee

  • Pour the coffee, whiskey, and sugar, if using, into a mug or heatproof glass. Stir to combine (if adding sugar, take care to stir until dissolved). Spoon coconut whipped cream over the top. Serve.

Why is it that Christmas trees always look way, WAY bigger once you get them in your house? More than ever before, our eyes were bigger than our living room this year. We ended up with a giant of a tree I still gape at it whenever I pass by.

This year is the first year we’ve had to use an actual ladder to dress our tree, just like in the movies, teetering dangerously on the top step – you know, the one you’re not supposed to use – risking life and limb. Literally life and limb, because I nearly took down both myself and the tree. BUT we made it happen. And now we’ve got a mammoth tree lording over our living room, with one bottom branch so heavy with toddler-hung ornaments that it’s touching the ground.

And all is right with the world.

Slow Cooker Peppermint Vanilla Lattes - An easy Crock Pot latte recipe with festive mint and warm vanilla flavors. Stir it all together and come back two hours later to a coffee shop in your kitchen! (We love these on Christmas morning!)

Christmas is indeed the most wonderful time of the year, and one of the reasons is the excuse to brew up fancy “lattes” and pile copious amounts of whipped cream on top.
